Cinnamon Applesauce Ornaments
I love crafting, especially when it’s easy, fun, and I can share it with friends. Cinnamon and applesauce ornaments tick all of those boxes, so I thought I’d share them with you.
This craft is so easy. You will need a bowl, spoon, rolling pin, equal parts unsweetened applesauce and cinnamon, wax paper, and cookie cutters or some way of making shapes. For this batch I used 1 cup of each applesauce and cinnamon.
Back in my preschool teaching days, we made these with the kids, so this is absolutely a family friendly activity. There are plenty of fun skills involved, like measuring, stirring, and space management (is that a thing?). It also uses all of the senses, you can see the colors blend together, feel it squish with your hands, hear the stirring and squishing sounds, smell the applesauce and cinnamon scents, and technically you could taste it, but I don’t recommend it. Barf.
Pour your applesauce and cinnamon into the bowl, stir with a spoon or spatula or squish with your hands, until a dough forms.
Roll your dough ( I roll mine between sheets of wax paper) until it’s at least 1/4” thick or thicker if you’d like. Then cut into shapes, I used cookie cutters to make fall and Christmas shapes, but you could also use a pizza cutter to make shapes or a glass to make circles. If you plan to use them as ornaments like I do, use a straw to make a hole for the string or ornament hanger. Then leave your shapes to dry or bake at the lowest temperature you can in your oven, until dry.
I love the look of red and white bakers twine for these ornaments, and that is usually what I use. Feel free to use any string or hanger you like, or just put the shapes in a bowl for their lovely scent.
If you store these in a ziplock bag, they will keep their cinnamon scent for a few years. It’s basically magic.
