The Great Escape: Day in My Life (Sept 2022)

I want to be as transparent as I can about the ups and downs of exploding your life. So I figured why not bring you along on a day in my life with no job, living with my parents, looking for a new house in a small town, and generally trying not to scream 100% of the day. Spoiler, most of my days are pretty boring and this was no exception.

9:00 AM: Wake up, Hang out in bed

I am not a morning person so I generally don’t crawl out of bed too early. Today I hung out in bed and listened to Up First, NPR’s morning news podcast, did a guided meditation on the Insight Timer app, and listened to How to Change Your Mind by Michael Pollan.

12:30 PM: Check Realtor.com & Wordle

After a few hours of listening to things it was time to check Realtor.com to see if any new houses had been listed, nope. House hunting is slowly killing me. We have seen almost everything in our price range and area. We’ve made three offers on two houses (one was under contract and then came back on the market) and have been outbid by cash offers all three times. *SCREAMS* Since there weren’t any new listings I moved on to the daily Wordle, got it in 4.

2:00 PM: Drive to Bristol to try Trailblazer Coffee

We’ve been looking at houses in Bristol so I figured I’d drive over (about 15 min. away) and try a new to me coffee place. Trailblazer is a drive thru coffee joint with coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and snacks. I got an iced latte with whole milk and no flavor or sweetener. It was fine, but not good enough to make the 30 minute round trip drive. If we end up living in Bristol I’d consider going back.

2:30 PM: Check out an Amish Market

On my drive back from Bristol I passed an Amish Market that had tons of beautiful plants and flowers outside so I made a quick U-turn and popped in for a look at their offerings. They sold some items form an Amish place about an hour away that I like, tons of bulk stuff like beans, candies, and flours of all kinds. They had pre made pie/cake fillings in piping bags for easy use, fresh produce, and ciders. It was a cute place. I didn’t get anything on this stop, but I would absolutely go back when I have a need for something they sell.

3:30 PM: Chick Fil A

I was getting hungry on my way back, so I stopped at CFA for a late lunch and tried the new autumn spice milkshake, which was horrible and tasted like someone ground up a cinnamon broom and sprinkled it in. 0/10, do not recommend.

4:45 PM: Make a Walmart Grocery Pick Up Order

I love grocery pick up so much. I made a Walmart grocery pick up order for a few items I needed to make a couple dinners this week and of course perused the Halloween candy selection. I can’t wait for October!

5:30 PM: Dinner at Bella’s

My parents had a small group meeting so we had an earlier dinner than usual at Bella’s. We got two medium pizzas to share and it was delicious. Who doesn’t love a good pizza night?

6:45: Dollar General

The Dollar General near my parent’s house has had a big banner out front advertising a clearance sale, so obviously we needed to see what was on clearance. It was a sad little selection of like 20 things, but they had fall decorations so I was excited. I got a little string of battery powered LED pumpkin lights, a miniature cinnamon broom for my brother, and a couple snacks.

8:00 PM: Walk Lucy

I forgot to take a picture of us walking Lucy, so here is an older picture of her being cute in her bathrobe.

8:30 PM: Ice Cream

I needed a make up treat after my disappointing autumn spice milkshake experience, so off to The Ice Cream Stop we went. I got pumpkin pie supreme and Christopher got peach, in waffle cones because we don’t mess around with ice cream.

9:00 PM: Watched Hacks on HBO

After our ice cream adventure and my parents returning home, we all settled in and watched a few episodes of Hacks. I had seen the icon for this show on HBO a few times, but never really paid much attention to it. Now that we’ve watched most of the first season, I wish I had started sooner. Every time we watch a few episodes I want to keep watching until we finish because I have no self control when it comes to binge watching TV shows, but my mean, responsible parents always want to go to bed before midnight and make us stop watching. RUDE.

11:30 PM: Journal & get ready for bed

The day had to end eventually. After we finished watching Hacks for the night, I got ready for bed, and journaled before reading a little Harry Potter and going to sleep.

It wasn’t a super exciting day, but I did get out and do a little exploring which was nice. It’s hard to fill the day when you don’t have a job, don’t know anyone in town, are depressed and don’t feel like doing things that take focus and patience, and people aren’t moving away so you can buy their house and decorate it. It’s been rough, but the cool weather and not having a job I hate help a lot.

Have you been a housewife/househusband/unemployed before? What did you do with your day? How do you make friends as an adult with no job? Let me know in the comments.
