Bergen, Norway

To celebrate Christopher turning 40 this year, we went on a big adventure to Sweden and Norway!

Third stop: Bergen, Norway

The Basics

We took a train from Oslo to Bergen. It took about seven hours, but the views were amazing. We brought some new to us treats for the journey.

We loved this hotel. It had such a nice vibe, an incredible breakfast buffet, and the best bathroom of the trip, by far.

This hotel was surrounded by parks and cute shopping.

Bergen is charming. Somehow, the whole city felt cozy.

Our first Bergen adventure was to visit Fantoft Stave Church. We took the bus and then hiked up a hill, I was not wearing the right shoes for this adventure. What’s new?

This church was built around 1200 and moved to its current location in 1883.

This church had such beautiful details. There are so many intricate carvings and mind-blowing craftsmanship. The setting was equally lovely. We got lucky with excellent weather that day.

Bergenhus fortress (this is a cool interactive map of the fortress) was built starting in the 12th century.

Håkon's Hall has been used as a royal residence, barracks for soldiers, a granary, and a prison. Now, it is used primarily as a concert hall and event space. I love old buildings, and this bad boy is really old.

Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to the remains of a medieval commercial hub on the central harbor in Berge, Norway. The current buildings have replaced previous ones burned in the fires of 1702 and 1955, but some stone cellars in the area date back to the 15th Century.

We went to this sausage stand twice because they had so many options and it was good.

We rode a cable car up to the top of Mount Fløyen to see the city of Bergen from above.

Our fjord cruise tour took us to see waterfalls and rural towns, it was beautiful.

We saw a sign for a free art gallery, and it was raining, so we figured, why not? When you walk in, the staircase straight ahead is classically beautiful.

Imagine our surprise when we got to the top of the stairs and saw this poster below.

When you get inside the main exhibit space, there are real, live, flapping, clucking, chickens. It was WILD.

Bergen was an adorable town and definitely worth a visit.
