Natalie & Christopher in Germany

Hey there!

We are Natalie and Christopher. We blog about life in the suburbs of Orlando, FL with no kids and one dog. Thanks for checking in.

A DIY foyer makeover

We started our first DIY project (other than painting)! We are adding board and batten to our foyer, and hopefully to the dining room if everything goes well in round 1! This is our foyer before. It is about 5ish X 5ish and has wood floors beige walls and a white door (inside). We are planning to paint the bottom 4 feet of the wall, including the battens, the same white as the trim in our house and the top half navy blue. We'll see how it goes!

This is the first stack of wood. We used select pine 1X3's, 1X2's, a 1X1 for a pesky corner and cove molding.

My brother Josh brought over my dad big saw and helped me with the first set of cuts. I wanted to watch someone who knew what they were doing first before I tried to do anything myself. I am trying to work on this project when I get home from work while Christopher is working so I plan to do about half of it on my own. It's pretty exciting.

Then we made sure the tiniest piece of wood was going to fit in it's tiny corner.

Then we took a break, ate dinner and Christopher and I picked up where Josh and I left off.

We got all of the top rail installed using liquid nails, a couple of screws, and some small nails. We just rain into a small problem with the cove molding, our nails are too big.  I Liquid nailed one section in but I'd feel a little better with a few finish nails in there, so I'm off to  Home Depot to buy those today and exchange a couple pieces of wood. I also need to get the white paint, and decide on a Navy color.

These are the navy's I'm choosing from. And is it just me, or do they all look the same?

This is the top rail, the molding is sitting on top for now until I get those little finish nails, but at least you can kind of see what we are doing. This project is a bunch of fun already and I think it's going to be really nice once we are done. Now we just have to install the cove molding, decide if we are sanding the wall to make it more smooth, install the battens, fill the nail holes, cracks and joints, sand everything, and paint! Totally doable! I can't wait to show you the finished product!
