My Parent's New Garage
As you may know, we have been living with my parents for about a million years, ok so like eight months. Anyway, while we’ve been here they have had a gigantic new garage built to match their 1900’s Victorian house in the historic district of town. It has been a huge pain in their ass, took way longer than planned and of course cost way more than predicted. So the usual construction drama, but with a historic twist. Well after too many months and dollars, it’s finally done. I’ve been taking pictures throughout the process and since I have nothing interesting happening in my life right now, I’m going to share their exciting life news, thanks Mom & Dad.
It all started with a weird wrap-around driveway. Then the contractor added lots of strings and sticks to mark it out.
They also added a new section of porch on the front of the garage so the whole wrap-around porch got a little makeover. They started with the porch while waiting for some of the garage permit process to go through.
Then they dug a little bit where the building would go.
Then they dug footers for the walls and the cement truck came!!! I was like a child outside watching the entire process of the cement truck pouring concrete. It was so cool.
Then of course the blocks and framing and such. A crane came!!
Then she got some sheet rock, siding, and a roof. So pretty with a little snow. Also how do roofers not die more often? Like just hanging out on a steep roof, no ropes, on ladders, just hanging out. HOW?!
Then end part didn’t have cool cement trucks or cranes, so I was less interested in this part, so I have fewer pictures, but here is the end-ish part. The garage doors, stairs to the loft, utility sink, front door, and trim were installed, she got painted, and the concrete floor was poured and sealed.
And then, because I am extra in the best way, we had a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the finished product.
The next step for them is filling it up with all of their stuff and cars, and for me, sitting on the new part of the porch.
It’s been fun to watch this process, but damn it seems like a huge pain in the ass. I kind of wanted an old historic house we could update and restore, and I am 10000% rethinking that now.
Congratulations, Mom & Dad! Your new garage is a beaut.
